Often taken for granted, lighting is one of the most significant parts of an inviting and productive household. When designing your home, lighting must be considered, as this can change the whole feel of the room, as well as being a necessity for many tasks, like preparing meals or working on the computer.
Basic principles of lighting
There are four basic principles of lighting, comprising of general, accent or feature, task and decorative lighting. Each of these offers a different “layer” of lighting.
General lighting is about filling a space. While not particularly interesting, it is practical, illuminating a space efficiently for general tasks. Accent or feature lighting refers to lighting directed at a specific area, with the focus on the subject the light is pointed at. Task lighting is for illuminating areas where you are performing task, such as reading or cooking. Decorative lighting is just as the name suggests – it is purely for decoration, creating architectural interest.
Natural lighting
While artificial lighting has its place, nothing can beat the sun’s rays. With Australia’s great weather and abundance of natural light, harnessing the power of the sun is a great way to not only illuminate your home, but also save on energy bills. Think big floor length windows, bright skylights and lots of outdoor living spaces.
